The Chase Freedom Flex is one of Chase’s no annual fee credit cards that is one of my favorite Chase credit cards, even though it’s not one of those expensive, lucrative credit cards with a high welcome bonus and a million credits, such as the Sapphire Reserve. Instead, it gives you 5x on rotating categories every quarter, and the categories for Q3 2026 have been revealed. Let me show you what they are, and how to activate them.

Basics of the Chase Freedom Flex: the most lucrative card you shouldn’t apply for
First, let’s have a look at the basics of this credit card, and then I’ll epxlain why I’m suggesting not to outright apply for this card:
- No annual fee.
- Bonus categories:
- 5x rotating category every quarter
- 5x on purchases through Chase Travel
- 3x at drug stores
- 3x on dining and take-out
- 1x on everything else
- Various insurances:
- Purchase rpotection
- Trip cancelation and interruption insurance
- Extended warranty protection
Overall, the Freedom Flex is a very well-rounded and lucrative card that works very well for a variety of everyday spending categories. The 3x dining is awesome and there’s not many cards that do 3x on drugstores. It’s also nice that it comes with some basic travel insurance.
The star of the show is the 5x rotating bonus category: these categories can be anything, from Amazon purchases, to gas, to dining, to donations to certain agencies. If the category lines up with your spending pattern, this can therefor be super lucrative; and if it does not, holding the card does not cost you any money. It’s a win-win! Note that they are sometimes referred to as ‘cash back’ categories, but they do earn Chase Ultimate rewards points, and if you have a Chase Sapphire or Chase Business Ink Preferred card, you cna transfer them to Chase’s airline and hotel partners. Also note that you’ll get 5x on up to $1500 worth of spending in these categories, after that it’ll go to 1x.
So why should you not apply for it outright?
A lot of us can only apply for so many cards in a certain amount of time. Chase has it’s 5/24 limit (max of 5 cards in a 24 month period) and other banks have similar sorts of limits. That means you need to be selective with the cards you get, and I’d recommend to select for cards with good, elevate welcome bonuses, and good value propositions for the longterm. What’s better than a free card? Well, there’s other cards out there that, thanks to credits, become (near) free. So, my recommendation is to apply for premium ‘beginner’ cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which recently got a refresh and currently (as of 6/15/2026) has a huge 100.000-point welcome bonus. Then if you want to give up that card, you downgrade the card to the free Freedom Flex card.

5x bonus categories for Q3 2026
So with the basics out of the way, what are the 5x rotating bonus categories for Q3 2026? This quarter we have 5 bonus categories that center around commuting and local travel:
- Gas Stations
- Public Transit
- EV Charging
- Select Live Entertainment
- Donations to United Way

In my mind, everybody will benefit from these bonus categories, since everybody is likely to use some kind of public transit, or a personal vehicle that requires fuel, be it gas or electricity. And with gas prices what they are, this may turn out an extra lucrative bonus category at this particular point in time. Personally I use New York City’s public transit, so I’m very happy to see 5x on public transit as well.
Mind you, you don’t need to pick between these categories: you activate all of them and will get 5x points throughout all these categories.
How to activate the Q3 2026 categories
Activating these categories is easy. Personally I like to go to the Chase app, but you can activate through the website as well.
Open the app and login into your account. You should be met with a list of your credit cards. you’ll want to tap the Freedom or Freedom Flex card to reveal the card’s details. Once you do that, scroll down and you’ll see information on the 5% cash back rotating bonus categories. You’ll see pane for the current quarter which (if you activated it) will say its active (with a green dot and ‘activated’), and there will be a pane below it for the new (next) quarter, which will say ‘not activated’.

Once you tap the pane for the new quarter, you will reveal the full details for the bonus categories: the categories will be listed, as well as some fine print on the activation and earning in these categories. To activate, just tap the blue ‘Activate’ button, and you’ll receive confirmation of successful activation. When you hit ‘OK’, the ‘Not activated’ status below the quarter’s start and end dates will turn into ‘Activated’.

Summary
The Chase Freedom Flex is an awesome card that can be incredibly lucrative thanks to its rewards structure. Star of the show are the rotating 5x bonus categories on up to $1500 of spend in those categories. For Q3 2026, the categories include gas, EV charging, public transit, United Way donations and select Live Entertainment. Activate them now for Q3 via the Chase website or app.
