I now catalog all active transfer bonuses and elevated credit card welcome bonuses

Here’s what’s on it:

  • Transfer bonuses in expiry order from all major partners (card issuers and third parties such as Rove).
  • Welcome offers for business, personal points, and airline/hotel co-brand credit cards, with annual fees and end dates where they’re published.

I also track all active points buying promotions

It’s common for loyalty programs to sell points, either by providing a bonus amount or providing a discount. The net effect is usually about the same, in that you get more points for less. Whether that’s a good deal or not really depends on the specific promotion, the loyalty program that’s selling it, and the redemption opportunities.

Generally I don’t recommend buying points speculatively, but in some cases these promotions really can be a good enough value that I will buy the points speculatively. Though usually only for programs that I know I’ll be redeeming through at least once or twice a year, because devaluations are common and can happen at any time.
